I'd be voting on the adapter at this point. My modem however works perfectly with the computer I am using at the moment and also worked flawlessly with my computer before the incident.So, I am wondering what the issue might The message I was getting from the intel pro/wireless software was "There is no supported device installed" At first, I did a system restore, after the restore everything returned to normal The really odd thing, somedays I get the above errors, and some days I don't and it will connect to my wireless network just fine.

In thise case i had to use a Toshiba wireless card with the same chipset to work in my Thinkpad. The IT people are only college students, so I don't really know if I should trust them. I replaced the adapter with the exact same model and still have the same symptoms--in both XP and Ubuntu. The same card is now in my X31.
When I do get the error, it doesn't simply go away by restarting. You can not post a blank message.
