And I'm using Sun Java Studio Enterprise 8 !! Are “la malplej juna” and “la plej maljuna” entirely interchangeable? Is the libgcj.so.7 library/file causing me a problem? Interestingly, I managed to get to the login screen using the Iced Tea Java, then got the black screen once logged in.

Unless you know you need it I'd remove it, but (re)installing OpenJDK / Sun may be enough, may need to try update-alternatives again to make sure that is the default.
